Very Fine Qajar Persian Khanjar Dagger
Persian Qajar Khanjar D agger
Date: Second half of the 19 C.
From the peak of the Qajar period in Persia mid 19 C. comes this very fine Khanjar dagger. Classical shape, very complete, with all parts untouched and original. Walrus Ivory grip. The marble like inner part of the tusk is regarded as most efficient in wound healing, which is one of the reasons for the extensive use of walrus ivory in sword and daggers handles.
High quality watered steel (Wootz) blade of good contrast pattern, with pronounced edges and central rib, chiseled with hunting scenes at its forte. The walrus Ivory grip is very finely carved with human images on thick floral background. Inscriptions in Arabic letters on the pommel and cross guard with a possible date of 1288 (?), 1871 in the Gregorian calendar. Original tooled leather cover with spiral seam stitching and original chased silver chape. .
Blade length 9, total 15 inches. Very good condition. Minor chips on the handle.
