Dagestan is situated on the southern border of Russia, in the Caucasus mountains. The area is rich in silver which was mined since early Greek times, hence the art of silversmith was developed and perfected in Dagestan. The region is famous for its silver work, specifically in the art of producing and decorating arms and armor
The Kindjal offered here is a very fine example for silver and niello work. made in Dagestan. Dated 1337 in the Islamic calendar. Classical blade with an off-centered deep fuller. The blade is engraved in Arabic letters. Heavy silver handle and scabbard deeply chiseled with delicate floral design and nielloed medallions. The back face is decorated with elegant floral niello decoration and dated 1337 , 1918 in the Gregorian calendar.
This Kindjal comes with classical leather belt also Dagestan work with nielloed silver parts o the belts and the dangling ribbons.
Blade 14 inches (36 cm) long. Total length 21 inches (53 cm). Belt length 46 inches (116 cm). Very good condition. It should be noted that the belt decorations are somewhat different from the kindjal decoration, which may suggest a latter “Marriage” of the two. Outstanding workmanship in silver.
