Very Fine Kindjal Dagger, 1910 Dagestan
Origin: Dagestanת Caucasus
Date: 1910

Dagestan is situated on the southern border of Russia, in the Caucasus mountains. The area is rich in silver which was mined since early Greek times, hence the art of silversmith was developed and perfected in Dagestan. The region is famous for its silver work, specifically in the art of producing and decorating arms and armor
The Kindjal offered here is a very fine example for silver and niello work. made in Dagestan. Dated 1910. Classical blade with an off-centered deep fuller. The blade is etched with dense floral design and the image of the Imperial double head eagle on one face and 1910Г.АЛИЛ (Year of 1910 Alil, probably the maker name) on the other face. The И is reversed, as in Latin script, a common mistake. Heavy silver handle and scabbard deeply chiseled with delicate floral design and nielloed medallions. The back face is decorated with elegant floral niello decoration.
Blade 14 inches (36 cm) long. Total length 21 inches (53 cm). Very good plus condition. Outstanding workmanship in silver.
The high quality etching of the imperial eagle may suggest that this dagger is made as a special order to a high ranking Russian officer or commander of the Imperial guard.
