The sword known as “Khayber Sword” is named after the famous mountain pass between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Although it is found all around: India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and also the bordering countries of Central Asia. The Khayber sword comes in different sizes, from large knife size to huge 40 plus inches blades. Very similar shape to all: Single edged with heavy triangular blade and strongĀ  T spine. The better blade will be forged from crucible steel (Wootz) or pattern welded steel. The grips will come with a variety of materials. Mostly wood, horn, bone, ivory metal or jade.

The exemplar shown here has a heavy wide blade with wide spine. The blade is perfectly forged from crucible steel (wootz) of high contrast pattern consistently and evenly spread on the entire blade. I grips of good age color. Steel bolsters and grip strap nicely decorated with gold koftagri inlay.

Blade 15 1/2 inches (39 cm). Total length 22 inches (52 cm). Very good condition. No scabbard. The quality of the steel suggest a Persian forging. I grips are more typical to North India. All together a very fine late 18 C. work of art.
