Steel works of the Qajar period in Persia (1789 – 1925) are well known for the quality and high level of decoration. The tradition combines chiseling, engraving and inlay decoration of the steel.
The dahl shield offered here is a good exemplar. Early 19 C. Excellent chiseling of floral design with gold inlay decoration and silver inlay inscriptions in Arabic letters (In the inlay technique known as koftgari). A brass rim around the perimeter. All finely executed.
Diameter 17 1/2 inches. Very good condition. The inner fabric cover, hand cushion and handles are missing.
