Steel works of the Qajar period in Persia (1789 – 1925) are well known for  the quality and high level of decoration.  The tradition combines chiseling, engraving and inlay decoration of the steel.

The dahl shield offered here is a good exemplar. Early  19 C. Excellent  chiseling of floral design with gold and silver inlay decoration and silver inlay (In the inlay technique known as koftgari) Chiseled inscriptions in Arabic letters and a brass rim around the perimeter. All finely executed.

Diameter 17 1/2 inches.  Very good condition.  The inner fabric cover, hand cushion and handles are missing.
