Ovoid Shaped Ceremonial Mace from Bukhara

Maces with ovoid shaped head are known to exist from as early as the 11 C. mostly served as insignia of rank carried before high ranking rulers and commanders to remind their power.

Several such maces with stone heads are known to come from Bukhara as is the case of the fine mace offered here. Onyx head between silver mounts richly nielloed in high contrast shades. The haft is wood set with nicely nielloed silver collars decorated with flowered medallions. The lower medallion inscribed in Arabic letters read the names of God: يا فتاح يا رزاق .The shaft is ending with a heavy silver ring.

Head is 4 inches (10 cm) tall 2 Inches (5 cm) in diameter. Total length 24 inches (61 cm).  Very good plus condition.
