Kilonda – Ceremonial Axe of the Songye People
Songye Ceremonial Axe
Origin: Upper Congo
Date: Early 20C.

The axes of the Songye people from the D.R.C (Democratic Republic of Congo) are a beautiful example of forging. The axe shown here, also known as Kilonda is different in the sense that it is made from copper and it is rather a symbol of chiefly power and prestige and not a fighting weapon. a 8 inches copper blade with chased decoration on both sides. Wood haft covered with tooled leather. Total length 18 inches. Very good condition. Some losses to the leather cover on the haft.
