Dagestan is situated on the southern border of Russia, in the Caucasus mountains. The area is rich in silver which was mined since early Greek times, hence the art of silversmith was developed and perfected in Dagestan. The region is famous for its silver work, specifically in the art of producing and decorating arms and armor

The Kindjal offered here is a fine example of silver chiseling and niello work made in Dagestan. Classical blade with an off-centered deep fuller and marked with a maker mark. Heavy silver  handle and scabbard deeply chiseled with delicate floral design. The back face is inscribed in niello work: صاحبه علي حاج ( Owner Ali Haj). Also two styled peacock images are niello added to the back side. A clear stone is set at the tip of the scabbard, may be a later repair.

Blade 14 inches (36 cm) long. Total length 20 inches (50 cm). Very good plus condition.  Outstanding workmanship in silver.
