Dagestan is situated on the southern border of Russia, in the Caucasus mountains. The area is rich in silver which was mined since early Greek times, hence the art of silversmith was developed and perfected in Dagestan. The region is famous for its silver work, specifically in the art of producing and decorating arms and armor
The Kindjal offered here is a fine example of silver chiseling and niello work made in Dagestan. Classical blade with an off-centered deep fuller. Original blackening of the blade edges. Heavy silver handle and scabbard deeply chiseled with delicate floral design. The back face is also decorated with niello design.
Blade 14 inches (36 cm) long. Total length 19 inches (48 cm). Very good plus condition. Outstanding workmanship in silver.
