Fine Georgian Qama Dagger with Twisted Steel Blade

15572 Category:

Origin: Georgia

Date: Mid 19 C.

Blade forged from twisted steel ingots is an old forging technique known as early as the 9th C. and always employed on highly regarded blades. The technique reached high level of workmanship in the Ottoman empire in the 18 – 19 C. as well as in the neighboring countries, and being widely used in modern times for forging high quality blades.

Top Caucasian and Ottoman Qama dagger blades were made from a twisted steel core forge welded between high carbon steel edges. The Georgian Qama dagger offered here is constructed in this technique. The pattern of the welding is clearly seen etched in the double fullers of the blade where the edges are highly polished. The blade forte is finely chiseled with flowers and birds images on the front face and koftgari gold inlaid on the rear face. Walrus tusk grip set with small turquoise stones. The scabbard is covered with green fabric and mounted with engraved silver mounts  partially gilded and nielloed and set with Turquoise  and red gem stones.

The decoration and the use of colored stones suggest a Georgian origin first half of the 19C. A Georgian Qama dagger with a similar decoration in the Hermitage collection, inventory number 3003, is attributed to Tiflis 1823 – 1829. (Y.A. Miller see below)

Blade length 12 1/2 inches (32 cm). Total length 17 1/2 inches (44.5 cm). Very good condition. Very minor blackened spots on the blade. The fabric on the back side of the scabbard is lightly worn and atined. Very fine late 19 C. rare artifact.
