Fine and early Yemenite Thouma Jambiya Dagger

The Yemenite Jambiya style Thouma is worn by the highest ranking people in the Yemenite society: Imams, Judges, Scholars and other aristocratic people. The Thouma daggers are therefore made by leading silversmiths and are rich in decorations. The Thouma is characterized by the wide blades, large I shaped handle and wide belt with silver attachments.
The exemplar shown below has a massive double edged wide blade with pronounced central rib, typical horn grip decorated with steel nails and mounted with imitation brass coins. The scabbard is of extremely high level workmanship. Very delicate silver filigree work. Heavy brocade belt with silver accessories: Hirz (amulet containers), Ibzim (False buckle) Siwah (Tounge decoration) and several Zahrah (silver rosettes). The scabbard as well as the Siwah are stamped with what looks as the mark of Yahya Amrya.
Blade is 8 inches long 3 inches wide. Length of the fully extended belt is 34 inches. Very good plus condition. Fine Authentic thouma Jambiya of the highest level workmanship. scabbard belt and accoutrement are Late 19 C. blade and grip are later, early – mid 20C.
