Exceptional Ottoman Style Iraqi Khanjar Dagger
Origin: Iraq - Ottoman empire
Date: Mid 19 C.

Ottoman Khanjar daggers are found all over the region. From the Balkan on the western borders, further east to the borders with Persia and south to the Arab peninsula. All have some similarities but differs in size, shape materials and decorations.
The Khanjar offered here is a fine quality version. Curved and double edged blade forged from fine delicate watered steel (Wootz). I shaped silver handle with undulating faces of the pommel and the cross guard. Whole silver scabbard very finely chased in a dense floral design. The top of the scabbard has also undulating faces to precisely fit the cross guard
Blade 9 1/2 inches (23 cm). Total length 18 inches (46 cm). Very good condition.
As for the exact origin of this khanjar, although the silver chased style and technique are Turkish, the undulating forms on the handle and the scabbard mouth may suggest an Iraqi origin
An impressive authentic 19 C. exemplar.
