A Early and Massive Sundang / Moro Kris Sword
Origin: Mindenao, Philippines
Date: 19C.

Sundang swords, sometimes referred to as Kalis, or Moro sword are most commonly found in Mindanao, Philippines but are also spread around from Malaya in the west to Moro Land in the east. All with small variations that make exact identification not easy. The Moro Sundang swords are usually larger and heavier than their Malay sisters as the case may be in the sword offered here.
The 19C Sundang sword offered here shows several unusual features: The massive blade is of flat hexagonal cross section with one long offset fuller. It is elaborately etched in a pattern to imitate twisted steel blade. One steel clamp hold the blade in position. Classical wood cockatoo style pommel with the grip bound with braided brass wires. Whole wood scabbard bound with several rattan strips bands. The tip of the scabbard is offset to one side as sometimes seen on early exemplars.
Blade 23 1/2 inches. Total length 30 inches. Very Good condition. A heavy, authentic and impressive sword.
