Syrian shamshir swords are identified by the specific style of the handle: Narrow horn grips bound with metal wires over the upper langet of the cross guard and a long diagonally inclined faceted pommel. Syrian shamshir may employ a variety of blades mostly from Persia or the Ottoman empire
The shamshir offered here has a massive fullered blade. The entire blade is gold inlaid (Koftgari) with long inscription in Aabic dated 1175 (1765). Steel cross guard. Classical horn grip bound with gilded(?) wire on the upper cross guard langet and a faceted steel pommel. Original scabbard bound with green velvet and set with long steel locket and chape and two bands for suspension rings. All scabbard and handle mounts are also gold inlaid with floral decoration and inscription also dated 1175 (1765). Long steel strip (later) covers the seam.
It should be noted that the inscription on the blade and the scabbard mounts is early 20 C. a bit later to the blade. The 1175 date is too early for the sword and the blade and possibly refers to the inscription.
Blade length 32 inches (81 cm). Total length 39 1/2 inches (100 cm). Very good condition, Very minor losses to the gold inlay on the scabbard mounts. Fine heavy and complete mid 19 C. Syrian shamshir sword.
