The Village of Jezzine situated in South Lebanon is renowned for the blades and cutlery craftsmanship since the 18 C. Blades with buffalo horn handles set with bone brass and colored inserts, sometimes as a bird or a fish. Similar handles are employed on cutlery sets, daggers, swords and other blades.
The khanjar offered here has a curved dual edge fullered blade a short curved cross guard and bolster and a black horn grip set with colored inserts brass nails and images of fishes. The pommel plate is silver wit Niello enamel with a gold emblem of the freemasons. Silver covered scabbard also decorated with black enamel.
Blade length 6 inches (15 cm). Total length 10 ¼ inches (26 cm). Very good plus condition. Early – mid 20th C.
Jezzine is inhabited by almost 100 % Crystians (Maronites and Greek Catholics) It is not surprising to find the gold emblem of the freemasons on the handle of this dagger. Probably a special order by a member of the Freemasons lodge.
