in the late 19 – Early 20 C, Damascus and Cairo were the centers that produced fine metal articles, copying earlier style of the Mamluk design work, specifically metal article densely inlayed with silver copper and sometimes gold.
The fine tray offered here is a good exemplar of this craft. A heavy brass tray of circular shape, with reinforced edges. The center of the tray is a dense silver and copper inlay of floral design. The rim is also decorated with four calligraphy panels with Arabic inscriptions.
Diameter 11 1/2 inches (29 cm). Weight 820 Gramms. Very good condition. Ottoman Syria, late 19 – early 20C.
