Description

Early swords from the Arab world employ straight double edge sword. Shamshir style sword with curved blade were adopted by many Arab cultures around the 10th C. But in two regions of the Arab peninsula - Oman and Yemen, straight blade swords continued to be used in the 18 and 19 C. and well into the early 20Th C. The Kattara sword is a good example.

The Kattara sword offered here has a very long straight and double edge blade with a short central fuller and a spatula shaped tip.  The blade is most probably of European origin, and it is marked with a dot punched image of a creature imitating the famous mark of the running wolf of Passau. Two handed wood hilt bound with leather strips and decorated with bands of twisted silver wire.  The pommel is a silver covered heavy square steel piece that acts as a counter weight to the very long blade, resulting in a very well balance sword. Painted leather covered scabbard with a silver wire seam and silver belt rings attachments.

Blade length 31 1/2 inches (80 cm). Total length 41inches (194 cm). Very good condition. Light blackened spots on the blade. The scabbard and the grip are partially restored.
