The Koumaya is the Moroccan version of the eastern curved dagger. It was used both by the Berber and Arab people in Morocco. It is characterized by a slender blade, usually dual edged at its lower half and single edge at the top (A strong Spanish influence). There is a big variety in the decoration styles and quality of the handles and scabbards.
The exemplar offered here is a fine whole silver from the first quarter of the 20 C. employing an older blade. Both handle and scabbard are high quality silver chiseled in a classical design, set with small gold medallions and decorated with inlaid red and green glass pieces.
Blade 9 1/2 inches (24 cm). Total length 16 1/2 inches (42 cm). Very good condition.
