Description

Mamluk revival art was a movement developed in Europe and in the Middle East in the late 19 – Early 20 C, in both architectural design and metalwork craft. Damascus was one of the centers that produced fine metal articles in a Mamluk design for the European market as well as for the local market.

The fine tray offered here is an excellent exemplar of this craft. A heavy brass tray of circular shape, with reinforced edges. The central silver medallion is surrounded by thick silver Arabic thuluth calligraphy on dense silver inlaid floral background. The rim is also decorated with several lines of may be gold and silver inlay of seven panels with Arabic inscriptions.  Most inscription refers to praising of Alla, but one interesting inscription reads: شغل السامر سنة ٤٠٩ work of El Samer 409. The 409 stands for a year and may read 1409 (1988) which is far too late for the item itself. Our opinion is that as similar works of art was intended for the European market, the craftsman inscribed the plate with a Gregorian calendar written from right to left and should read 904 (or 1904) a date that fits perfectly to the style and work.

Diameter 14 inches (35cm). Weight 2.6 kg. Fine condition. Minimal losses to the gold lines. Rare article, Ottoman Syria, early 20C.
