The demand in the 19 C. for top quality arms and armor in the Oriental markets increased the trade of such arms and armor from Europe. Many swords daggers and the like were produced in various European countries by skilled craftsman and exported to the Orient. These were made in a classical Oriental shape and materials but the level and style of decoration were highly European. Such swords were purchased by wealthy buyers from Turkey as well as from other countries in the Levant: Syria, the Arab peninsula and other countries.
The Shamshir sword offered here is such an example: European made fine quality sword. Blade forged from crucible steel known as Sham (Wootz steel with rather low contrast pattern common to the Levant). High quality handle with polished horn grips and gilded silver mounts - Pommel cover, cross guard and grips strap. Gilded silver scabbard with engraved decoration.
Blade 31 1/2 inches (80 cm), total length 38 inches (97 cm). Very good condition. Very impressive 19 C. sword.
