Description

Ottoman shamshir swords, the main battle sword of the Ottoman empire is characterized by the deeply curved, wedge cross sectioned blade and pistol grip with bulbous pommel.  The better blades are mostly forged from crucible steel (Wootz). Shamshir swords were also made for youngsters. Same shape and proportions but shorter and thinner blades.

The shamshir sword offered here is made for a young fighter or for a son or a relative of a high rank warrior.  Light curved single-edged blade forged from crucible steel (Wootz) of good pattern. The hilt is composed of R horn grips, bulbous pommel, chased brass grip strap and cross guard. Velvet fabric covered wood scabbard mounted with a brass band for suspension rings and brass chape.

Blade length 28 1/2 inches (73 cm), total length 35 inches (89 cm). Good condition. Blackened spots and few corroded spots on the blade. Minor edge nicks. The scabbard mounts are later and of lesser quality than the sword.
